RD Tuna Canners Ltd. Fully owned and managed by the RD Group of Companies, is now poised to meet the challenges of the 21st century and thereby affirms its thrust to produce quality canned tuna products. Billed as Papua New Guinea's project of the year 1997, RD Tuna Canners together with sister company RD Fishing PNG Ltd. were incorporated in Papua New Guinea and have granted pioneer status by the PNG government.

Both companies are the first and only integrated tuna fishing and canning operation in the country. The operations of the two companies are governed by a 20 years agreement signed by the RD with both the independent state of Papua new Guinea and the Provincial government of Madang , PNG. The agreement commenced on July 31, 1995 and would end (although subject to renewal) on July 31, 2015.

Although new in PNG, RD has been into the fish and marine products processing business since 1981. In the Philippines RD operates the following marine products related type business

1.Commercial Tuna fishing
2.Two canneries with 140 and 200 metric tones capacity for each.
3.Fish and prawn processing plant geared for export.
4.7,000 metric tones cold storage in PNG and 12,000 metric tons in Philippines.
5.Two ice plants capable of producing more than 100 metric tones of ice per day.
6.Prawn and fish farms.
7.Prawn hatchery.
8.Two large wharves.
9.Cooked tuna loins processing plant.
10.Two slips ways and dockyard facilities complete and side by side with modern maintenance and repair yards.

THE RD TUNA CANNERS COMPANY

One of the 16 business units comprising the RD Group of Companies, RD Tuna Canners facility can process up to 200 metric tons per day of Tuna raw materials to produce canned tuna and frozen cooked tuna loins for its customers worldwide

RD TUNA and the MADANG COMMUNITY

RD Tuna Canners is based in Madang, Papua New Guinea. It is situated within 6.5 hectares of land where the cannery complex and other support facilities are also located ..The cannery complex serves as a nucleus of a self-contained community of households, small industries and businesses that look at the company as an opportunity for growth and development.

Another facility located about 20 km away from the cannery has been added to the growing reach of RD within the Madang community. RD is currently developing 860 hectares of land where the 104m private wharf, 7000  metric tons capacity cold storage with 36 metric tons/day blast freezing capability, a fish processing facility and 90 metric tons (daily capacity) ice-making plants are also located. This new facility serves as a docking and trans shipment area for the 45 fishing vessels (out of more than 100 vessels that the RD Group operates in the Philippines, Indonesia and PNG) that RD operates within Papua New Guinea.

THE PEOPLE

The Company’s 3500 strong workforce form a merry mix of personalities from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Just like the company, a majority of the employees are young with ages ranging from 18 to 30 years.

THE RD TUNA CANNERY

The cannery complex is composed of the cannery proper itself, power plant, steam plant, waste water treatment plant, microbiology and chemistry laboratories , two big warehouses where the labeling lines are  housed and a separate can making  facility and printing press to print and process labels for the canned tuna products. The cannery can process 200 tons of fish per day  depending on market demand.

THE RD TUNA PRODUCTS

Its processing lines can produce four can sizes (1880gm catering size and two retail sizes, 95gm ounces,185gm and 425gm ). More can sizes and packing media can be added depending on the needs of the market.

THE TUNA Fishing and Cannery MARKET

The canned tuna products caught and canned from Madang, Papua New Guinea are shipped to the tuna consuming people in Europe, US, Japan, Australia,Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Sri Lanka, and local PNG market.
